Games of Chance

Many activities involve elements of risk and hope of gain and may depend on the outcome of an uncertain event or events - business ventures, buying and selling stock, military strategies, and foreign relations, for example. Participation in such enterprises is often referred to as gambling or taking a chance. This article, however, is intended to cover specifically those activities associated with gambling.

Backgammon A game played by two players on a unique board. A bar divides this board into two equal rectangles one of which is designated the inner or home table and the other the outer table. Each player throws one die from the cup. The player throwing the higher number plays first by using both his and his opponents' numbers. Thereafter, each player throws his own two dice.

Bingo This game of chance has many names and variations including lotto, keno, lucky, radio, and fortune. It is played using cards which has a grid of numbers. A row of randomly selected numbers is called out by a 'banker'. The first player whose card five of the called numbers appear in a row is the winner

Blackjack The principal card game in U. S. casinos wherein a winning hand consists of cards getting as near to 21 as possible without going beyond and also beating the dealer's total.

Roulette The game begins when the dealer asks players to place their bets. He starts the roulette wheel spinning, and then spins a small ball on to the bowl. Players may continue to place bets while the wheel and ball are in motion until the ball slows down. The dealer then calls that there is no more bets. When the ball falls and comes to rest between any two metal divisions of the wheel, it marks the winning number and colour. The dealer immediately declares the winning number and its colour. He gathers all losing bets, and then he pays off the winner or winners with the right sum of chips owing to each winning stake.

Slots The game begins with a player dropping a token into a slot. The player pulls the knob to match the symbols on wheels. If it does the player wins.

Poker Five cards makes up a poker hand. Players try to put together combinations of five cards of the similar suit, five-card sequences, two or more cards of a kind. A player may bet by bragging he has the highest card combination even if the truth is he does not. He can beat all the other players by bragging if those with higher hands do not match his bet.
